Booking Through Thursday...Gluttony

Mariel suggested this week’s question: Book Gluttony! Are your eyes bigger than your book belly? Do you have a habit of buying up books far quicker than you could possibly read them? Have you had to curb your book buying habits until you can catch up with yourself? Or are you a controlled buyer, only purchasing books when you have run out of things to read?

Yes, we love books at our house. Before I rediscovered my local library, I was always buying a new book or two at every opportunity. For me, for my husband, for my boys. My TBR pile is huge. I keep working my way through it, but it keeps getting bigger. I receive books in the mail to review and they add to it. I see books on Goodreads or reviews from other bloggers and I get those books from the library and it keeps getting bigger.

It's nice when there is no time limit on when a book needs to be read. It's also nice to have a ready-made reading stack available. The only thing I have "curbed" in the last year or so, is how many books I actually purchase. The library has been very good for my pocketbook. I can read it there, first, and if I really like it, then I can purchase it later. My real weakness is my boys. I can say no to a lot of things, but when they bring home school book orders, I have to set limits or we would go crazy!!

  1. I've rediscovered the library too. Now, I don't know what I'd do without it.

  2. That would be a great name for a book blog "Book Gluttony".

Anyway I dont buy ANY books. But I go way over board at the library. No way I can read all the books I get before they are due.

  3. Hello there! Thanks for dropping by today & leaving a comment :)

I think you have the right idea, with the library concept. Maybe I should pay an exploratory visit to ours, sometime.

I'm afraid I haven't really visited, for years. I somehow seem to remember they only did old titles and coursebooks & stuff, but maybe that has changed since.

    Here's to hoping!

  4. I don't use my library much as it is small and doesn't have much selection. I use paperback swap and bookmooch to help keep the cost of books down.

  5. I believe every book has its moment with an individual reader, and that is why I have to keep buying them in case I have a whim for that particular book.

Proud to be a glutton, but I try not to buy. I grab the ones that I'm most desperate to read and leave the rest on a list.

  6. I've been using the library more, too...but those due dates can be a problem ;-)

  7. I've been using the library way more this year, since our finances have been very tight. They're great, though, and will even order books they don't have if they think other readers beside me will like it, too.

  8. My problem with the library is that I can never meet the deadlines. I'm too slow a reader. I definitely buy too many.

  9. I don't use the library any more. Simply because there is one nearby.

    Book gluttons, are we?

  10. I've recently started going back to the library, too. It makes sense as I have very limited space for books, and that's mostly filled up already. Also, I think I read a little faster when I know I've got a deadline to meet. Not as pleasant, but more efficient.

  11. Dear Sisters,
I hope that I will reach some of you and that I will have your support as I take action into my plan. As some of you know I am just a teacher, with a big heart and love for children. I recently wrote a novel: The Black Parade: The Phantom Series. Some of you may have already seen it on my facebook. It’s an adult total chick lit urban fantasy novel written to capture the mind of those willing to laugh out loud, tremble a little, and possibly even cry. My whole purpose in posting this, is so will go to my web site: www.thephantomseries.com and help me raise money for St. Jude. I am trying to raise $5000 by December. So, please help my cause and go to my site or check out The Black Parade on facebook. I hope to hear your comments and I know you will enjoy the read, because it is totally for us Mormon moms who need some clean fantasy in our lives.

  12. It's not just book buying but book borrowing too. I tend to borrow huge amounts of books (another word for this is 'book hogging') and racked up huge fees. *sigh*

  13. Thanks for visiting my blog! I have re-discovered the library this year so I have probably bought fewer books but it is good to have a nice big pile to choose from!
