Booking Through Thursday...Bookcases 2

I’ve always considered that my bookcases give a pretty fair representation of me as a person—they show my interests, what kind of things I like, that I have a curious mind, the kinds of things I study … all that. But with the increase of e-books, that litmus test of personality is going by the wayside. Unless someone takes my Kindle and browses through it, there isn’t an immediate, visible display of my interests … am I the only one who finds that kind of sad? Going forward, about the most we’ll be able to tell about someone is that they OWN an e-book reader … but no real idea of what they actually read. I’m going to miss that.

This is a follow up to last week's question about perusing other people's bookcases.  I love looking at bookcases and I agree that a bookcase can be a very good representation of a person or family.  The bookcase in our living room is full of books, some dvds, some cds, family photos and and an assortment of Lego or clay creations.  The other bookcases scattered throughout our home are similar.

I have only recently begun using my e-reader and while e-readers are convenient, it's not as easy to see what someone is reading or their taste in books. I love being out and about and noticing someone read a book that I have enjoyed or talking with them about the book they are reading.

My e-reader won't ever replace real books in my life, but I have become more selective about the books I do keep or purchase.  I have to truly love a book before it goes on my shelves.

  1. I completely agree--nothing more fun to see if my taste is similar or not with a friend or relative. I've found many, many great books this way!

    Thanks for visiting my BTT!

  2. One year a neighbor was moving and told my teenagers how many books she had. The neighbor asked them to come over and take what they wanted. When they went to her house, she had a tiny bookcase, waist-high, and that was it. My kids were aghast. We have 6 floor to ceiling bookcases and several smaller ones.

It's funny what some people think. If she hadn't gone on and on about how many books she had, my teens probably wouldn't have thought anything about it.

  3. I almost wonder if these days we also need to be on the lookout for a tablet or e-reader as well as bookcases. I know I like having physical copies of books, but I have my e-reader stuffed full as well.

  4. I don't think I'm shocked when I don't see bookcases but I definitely look them over when I do.

  6. I also enjoy looking at other people's bookcases. I suspect that most of us readers like to do it.

  7. I'm so glad you focus on giving your kids books of their own. That's so important for developing a love of reading: personal ownership.

  8. Hi Holly,

Finally, I have found someone who shares my own views almost to the letter!

Every room in our house has books in it and I will quite often just sit and look at the titles, just to remind myself of all the great reading I have to come one day!

I'm afraid that I never hold on to a book once I have read it. There are just too many great books out there begging to be read, to ever contemplate reading a book more than once!

My books are always passed on to family members on my husbands side of the family, who are also avid readers, or taken to the charity shop where I volunteer, to be sold.

The latest craze around here, is for villagers to turn redundant old fashioned telephone boxes, into mini lending libraries, where you can go to exchange books. Now I always have a small bag of books in the boot of the car when we are out and about, so that I can leave a few in one of these 'pop up' libraries, when we come across them. I may even borrow one or two in exchange, although only if hubbie isn't looking!

Nice post, I enjoyed replying to this one.

    Yvonne

  9. I always look at peoples' book shelves, but I'm never surprised when there aren't any. I like to assume they are just keeping them in a room I haven't seen.
