An Unexpected Angel...Review

About the book:
Ella Davies, is focused, independent, and driven. Her hard work is finally paying off and she is on the brink of great success. But what no one knows is that her frantic drive is born not from a desire to succeed, but from a need to forget – forget her past, forget her guilt, and mostly, forget the tragedy that changed her life forever.

Ella’s strategy seems to be working but on Christmas Eve she meets Cohen, a strange man with an even stranger purpose. Cohen catapults Ella back through time and forces her to confront not only her own pain, but the pain of those long since passed. In the process, Ella learns about courage and compassion and that in the darkest hour, no one is ever alone.

With a quirky twist on A Christmas Carol, this is a lovely Christmas novella.  The pain of Ella's past prevents her from finding joy in the future and she's become a hardened, driven lawyer.  Alone on Christmas Eve, she meets Cohen, a frustrating, laconic stranger and finds herself thrown back in time and into situations where she has no idea what to do or why she's there.  What she learns is as much about herself as it is about serving other people.

I loved this twist on angels.  I am a firm believer in guardian angels and I am a firm believer that those guardian angels are very often our family members who have passed away before we have.  The thought is very comforting to me and deeply personal experiences have reinforced that belief.  With Cohen and Ella, Janet explores the guardian angel premise and I loved it, I absolutely loved it.  I loved the lessons Ella learns: that, even in our darkest times, we are not alone and life is very definitely worth living.

This is a quick, engaging and beautiful Christmas story and one that would make a fantastic gift.
