Childhood Favorites...Nancy Drew

Childhood favorites. Everyone has a favorite book or author from childhood. A book that touched them or changed them. A book that perhaps initiated their love of reading and put them on the path of libraries and learning.

Childhood Favorites is a monthly series focusing on beloved books from the past.

I adore Nancy Drew. I had all of the books as a little girl. I would devour them and I went on all those adventures with Nancy, Bess, and George.

As a pre-teen my best friend and I would act out our own mystery adventures in the backyard. She was Nancy and I was George. And when she moved away, we wrote letters to each other in code, because Nancy uses code in one of the books.

I don't know if the books have been updated for today's time, because the first book, The Secret of the Old Clock, was published in the 30s. So, the originals are pretty dated. I know there have been television shows and films made. I have vague recollections of watching Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys in the 80s, but don't remember anything about them.

For clever children, Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys were terrific series'. Implausible? Yes. Fun? Most definitely.

I only have sons, so I gave all my books to my girlfriend, because she only had daughters. Because you have to share Nancy.

For me? Nancy is a beloved childhood friend and memory.

What about you? What is one of your childhood favorites?

  1. Dearest George,
I still, some how, have my books. My daughter's weren't as interested as I was, but I couldn't part with them. They were boxed up and waiting in storage during multiple moves around the country for my husband's work. But once we settled again, they finally found their home in my loft bookcase. I sniffled a bit, smiled a lot and snapped pictures when my Granddaughter discovered all the yellow covers and sat quietly going through book after book. Here's to the next generation and summer memories.
    Love,
    Nancy

    1. Nancy, it thrills me to see new generations learn to love Nancy and George as we did. I cherish my memories of that time with you! Love, George.
